The seed drill

A hopper, a row of tubes and a question of even delivery. Follow the journey from seed box to furrow.

The yellow drill in our archive makes the sowing process easier to picture. A box holds material above the ground; tubes lead towards the rows below. The accompanying film shows the tractor and implement moving across a prepared field. It records a moment of work, rather than proving the depth or quantity delivered.

A row begins above the soil

A seed drill brings several jobs together: metering seed, carrying it down tubes and opening furrows. TNAU’s description of a tractor-drawn seed-and-fertiliser drill explains these components and the adjustment of seed delivery. A machine designed for both materials can keep them in separate compartments and delivery paths. The exact arrangement needs to be checked on the particular drill. [1]

The visible hopper does not tell us the selected rate, whether fertiliser was loaded, or how accurately the machine performed. Those belong in the operation record, alongside the crop, seed lot and measured area.

Settings need a check

Before sowing, a competent operator checks the manual, the intended crop and the actual seed lot. Calibration compares the amount delivered over a known test with the intended target. Tubes, outlets and openers also need to be clear and in working order. Field checks then look at distribution and placement; an empty hopper alone cannot establish even sowing.

What to notice in the film

Watch the relationship between the tractor, the implement and the ground. A short view can show movement and the arrangement of equipment. To assess establishment, we must return later and look at the emerging rows.

Machine adjustments and clearing blockages require safe isolation. Stop the drive, isolate the power and wait for movement to cease before approaching working parts; follow the machine’s instructions. [2]
