The laser land leveller
A tractor, a scraper and a tripod at the field edge. How laser levelling works, and what a field check needs to confirm.

The tripod at the edge of our laser-levelling film stands apart from the tractor crossing the prepared field. It supplies the reference. The scraper moving behind the tractor does the earth-moving work.
The reference stays; the scraper moves
A laser transmitter establishes a reference plane. A receiver mounted on the scraper detects its position relative to that plane. The control system uses the signal to raise or lower the scraper, moving soil from higher places towards lower ones. IRRI explains these components in its land-levelling manual. [1]
The target is chosen for the field and its water management. Levelling can help water spread more evenly, while an appropriate grade and outlet still need to allow drainage. Our irrigation guide follows supply and drainage together; the wheat season shows how both become part of the work. [2]
Check the surface against a target
A useful check compares elevations at recorded positions across the field. IRRI's manual describes surveying with a transmitter, receiver and measuring rod. With an agreed target and reference, the readings identify high and low areas before work and show what remains afterwards. A smooth-looking surface or a completed tractor route cannot supply that comparison. [1]
After irrigation, the distribution of water adds another observation: where it reaches, where it waits and where it remains trapped. Compare that field view with the survey readings when assessing the result.
Follow the work
Our film shows the tractor and scraper moving across the field while the transmitter stands at its edge. The next useful check is on the ground: compare the finished levels with the target, then follow the water after irrigation.
Keep the intended grade and follow-up readings with the job. Before inspection or adjustment, stop, isolate and secure the equipment against restart, following the particular machine's instructions. [3]
